Bob's Ranch House, Etna California Happy New Years All! SRWC is hoping this email finds you well. We have an exciting presentation line up from our friends down river at the Mid Klamath Watershed Council, along with an update from the Klamath National Forest, MaMaija Meneks, District Fish Biologist, regarding some of the great work happening within USFS lands.

Community Based Upslope and Instream Restoration in the Middle Klamath Subbasin

Since 2001, the Mid Klamath Watershed Council (MKWC) has worked with a diverse array of partners to increase the scope and scale of watershed restoration in the Middle Klamath Subbasin through facilitation of collaboratively designed strategies and projects that incorporate western science, traditional knowledge and common sense to restore the function of our local forests and streams.

MKWC director, Will Harling, will talk about the history of the organization, provide updates on current fisheries projects identified and implemented through the Middle Klamath Instream Working Group, landscape scale forest restoration projects collaboratively identified by the Western Klamath Restoration Partnership, and the Klamath River Prescribed Fire Training Exchange that is demonstrating how controlled burns can be used to more effectively protect communities from wildfires.

This presentation will share lessons learned in planning and implementing upslope and instream habitat restoration projects and offer perspective on how to accomplish long-term goals of restoring forest resiliency, salmon recovery, and community vitality.

Will Harling: Will is the director of the Mid Klamath Watershed Council, serves on the steering committee of the Northern California Prescribed Fire Council, and leads the Western Klamath Mountains Fire Learning Network. He has been a lifelong advocate for increasing the use of prescribed fire to create fire resilient forests and communities in the Western Klamath Mtns in Northern CA and beyond. He has also been restoring salmon habitat throughout the Middle Klamath Subbasin for two decades. Will is part fire ecologist, fisheries biologist, fire fighter, fire lighter, storyteller, community organizer, desk jockey, fisherman, grant slave, and father of two beautiful wild mountain kids.
